Chris Routh
Athletic Bands Teaching Assistant
Originally from San Diego, California, Chris Routh is a freelance trombonist and educator, currently residing in the Boston area. Chris has played trombone in many settings and styles, and enjoys playing chamber, solo and orchestral music on the trombone. Chris also plays the tenor and bass sackbut and has performed in various early music groups on these period instruments.
In the Spring of 2020, Chris earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in trombone from UCLA. In his time at UCLA, Chris was an active member of the UCLA Bruin Marching Band, in addition to his responsibilities as a trombonist in the band, Chris was a section leader and head librarian for the band as well. In his time in the Marching Band, Chris traveled across the country to play at sporting events, and in 2018, Chris was one of 20 band members selected to travel to Nagoya, Japan as a featured performer at the Ekitopia Festival Parade. Chris can be heard playing with the band on Muse’s album, Simulation Theory (Super Deluxe) on the track “Pressure” (Feat. the UCLA Bruin Marching Band). Chris is thrilled to continue his marching band career as the graduate assistant of The Boston University Athletic Bands.
Chris has also performed with the UCLA Symphony, Philharmonia, and Wind Ensemble. Notable performances include Mahler 2 in Royce Hall with the UCLA Philharmonia, and a performance of Bernstein’s Mass at Disney Hall as a collaboration between UCLA’s Wind Ensemble and the LA Phil under Gustavo Dudamel.
Chris has extensive chamber experiences as part of two brass quintets, the UCLA Gluck Brass Quintet, and Moniker Brass, who got to attend the Aspen Music Festival to study chamber music with members of the esteemed American Brass Quintet. Chris has also performed in the International Trombone Festival in 2017, and the 2018 Latzsch Trombone Festival in Germany. Chris’s primary teachers are Sean Reusch, James Miller, Michael Powell, and Don Lucas.
